The Inspiration Behind Pure Battlefield
By James Hogan, aka Adama, PURE Founder & Community Lead
I have been gaming for over 30 years. I love video games; I love the adventure, the challenge, the wonder, the sense of immersion. Some of my favorite memories include college LAN parties playing Doom, and making friends around the world playing early MMOs like Asheron’s Call.
But one thing I’ve learned is that most of the time, the social experience of gaming sucks. Many games don’t provide a good means of communicating with other players. Voice chat, if it exists, is usually fraught with problems: technical bugs, poor gameplay integration, and lack of participation are commonplace. And when you do find yourself interacting with other players, you often wish you weren’t — unless racial slurs, extreme aggression, and general asshattery are what you’re looking for.
It’s no wonder that many people envision the stereotypical “gamer” as an anti-social outcast holed away in a basement. But what the stereotype misses is that the vast majority of gamers are not anti-social. We want social interaction — humans are social creatures! The problem is that in gaming, it’s hard to find social interaction that’s friendly, welcoming, and accessible. Most online gaming communities are socially exclusive or have onerous participation requirements. Conventions require lots of time & money to attend.
In contrast, more mainstream pastimes have very accessible, easy-to-find social institutions. Bars exist as communal gathering places for people who like to drink, or perhaps play darts or billiards. Runners & cyclists come together in local racing events. Sporting & concert enthusiasts tailgate together before events. It doesn’t require any great effort to find & participate in one of these (and have fun!), if that’s what you like to do. Gaming shouldn’t be any different.
There is a need and an opportunity to address this in the gaming world. This is about more than simply making gaming more fun, although it certainly includes that. Gaming communities have the potential to make gaming a socially connective experience, instead of a lonely and isolating one. They have the potential to promote the social values we want, instead of whatever social values are being reinforced by the behavior of the “lowest common denominator” that happens to be present. And for those who feel sufficiently inspired, communities provide the opportunity to channel one’s passion about gaming into volunteer collaboration that not only gives back to others, but teaches useful life skills along the way.
This is what PURE is about.
We’re building this community for the long-term — my goal is for PURE to thrive for as long as gaming is a relevant human endeavor. That is an intentionally audacious goal, and one that highlights the nature of the PURE community as a gift to the gaming public, because the idea is for PURE to survive far beyond the individual involvement of any particular person. This is not about empire building or ego inflation. It’s about making this community as strong as possible, and bringing this much-needed experience to as many gamers as possible around the world.
Our Purpose and Values
Our Purpose and Values define the core mission and character of the Pure Battlefield community. As a large and diverse group, they provide us with a cohesive sense of identity that is necessary for PURE to provide a consistent experience for people over time.
To provide socially rewarding, community-oriented gaming experiences to the gaming public.
Fun: As a gaming community, participation should be fun for players and volunteers alike.
Friendliness: Our community is friendly, and we don’t tolerate people acting like jerks or being mean to others.
Openness: We are always open to new people and ideas. There are no membership applications or approvals required to participate, and everybody’s voice is important.
Quality: We hold our offerings to high standards, striving to ensure that they deliver a consistent and polished experience.
Transparency: As a community, we are the sum of our members’ participation and support. Support requires trust, and trust requires transparency.
Our community strategy is rooted in our Community Purpose & Values. To determine our strategy, we ask ourselves the question “What initiatives will most effectively further our purpose, and are most aligned with our values?”
